My current budget notebook pick is the Gateway NV5387u. It's price at the time of this posting is $499.99 which includes the shipping (via Buy.com).
If your primary use for your home computer is using the Internet and Microsoft Office, then this computer will more than adequately meet your needs. It also has enough power to run higher end software like Adobe Premiere Pro and AfterEffects, but performance in these applications will not be stellar.
